Consistent Safety Performance Birse Metro has over the past five years, achieved a consistently high level of safety performance. Since 1999 we have carried out in excess of three million man hours work on the London Underground network with only a total of five three day accidents occurring during this time. This achievement has been based upon a commitment by all our staff, site operatives and sub-contractors to ensure our working practises and procedures are safely carried out. Our success has been founded upon proactive management, teamwork, forward planning and the continual review and monitoring of training requirements. The requirements of London Underground's contract Quality, In 2003 Environmental, Safety & Health (QUENSH) Conditions coupled with the Birse Metro Management System govern all our safety operations. These conditions specify a highly regulated safety culture. In 2002 external safety auditors and our own Safety Advisors audited the Company's site operations over 200 times against the requirements of QUENSH. These audits have resulted in Birse Metro being placed in first and second place respectively in the Contractors Safety Comparison Tables of Metronet Rail BCV and Tubelines. With both these companies we are designated a low risk supplier and having one of the best safety compliance performances on the Underground network. ROSPA's Every year since 1998, Birse Metro has shown clear evidence of its commitment to safety by attaining a Gold Award for Occupational Safety awarded by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. QUALITY Birse Metro has been successful in meeting levels of assurance required by both our customers and the Birse Metro Management System. The year 2003 placed greater emphasis on fulfilling these requirements by the appointment of an Assurance Manager dedicated to providing support to the project teams and ensuring assurance requirements are identified, implemented and programmed through all the stages of design and construction. This Commitment has resulted in Birse Metro achieving registration to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and the launch of an electronically networked management system throughout the company. The transition to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 together with the achievement of ISO 14001 certification has provided the first phase of a programme to integrate Health, Safety, Quality and Environment into one Management System. The final phase of the integration process is planned for December 2004 with application for registration to OHSAS 18001:1999 is planned for December 2004; this will finalise the integration of the management system, which is currently electronically. Environmental Management A significant achievement for Birse Metro in spring 2003 was the gaining of ISO14001 certification for our Environmental Management System. The BSI auditors have given very positive feedback during surveillance assessments to both our approach and commitment to the implementation of the Environmental Management System. An ongoing Environmental Action Plan has assisted us in focusing on continual improvement for a relatively new concept of Environmental Management. Current objectives are:
We believe good environmental practice and sustainability is key to our future which goes hand in hand with health, safety and quality. Work has begun to combine our environment and health and safety systems to provide a robust and focused integrated Health, Safety and Environmental Management System to improve our management of projects in future years. |
